Why do Christians take communion and why is this invaluable gift not being used more in the body of Christ?
In my opinion, many Christians associate communion with a ritual that is taken on Sunday in the company of other believers. While that is true, the breaking of bread can be used everyday for physical healing, forgiveness, and protection.
Communion has many names, it is also called “The Lord’s Table,” “The Holy Meal,” “The Sacrament,” “Cup of Blessing” or “Breaking of Bread.” It’s a holy time where we reflect and share in the blood and body of Jesus Christ to receive what was accomplished on Calvary on our behalf.
The holy communion is a spiritual meal that brings healing to the body and elicits help from above. The areas in your life that are spiritually dead, come alive by taking communion. It is a meal of comfort for those who are praying and interceding for loved ones who have lost their way.
The bread heals and wards off sickness, the blood protects and infuses the life of Christ into our bodies and opens our spiritual eyes. The broken body and shed blood of Jesus is not just for eternity, but for NOW. We must declare it now while we are living on this earth.
Communion should not be thought of as a mere tradition, but a practice where every believer should be experiencing the full extent of this healing and protective gift on a daily basis, especially anyone who is sick, under attack by Jezebel, or has family members that are not saved or who are not walking with the Lord.
The breaking of bread is an act of obedience where we step, not only into divine healing, but Divine health through the finished work of the cross. Communion is God’s designated method for healing. Jesus, Himself, told us why we celebrate communion: ” Do this…in remembrance of me.” (1 Corinthians 11:25).
Communion represents Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross for all mankind. The elements are tangible reminders of Christ’s love that we can physically hold in our hands. A visible reminder, that just as our physical bodies need sustenance, we need Christ to live spiritually.
Communion is communing with Christ. We partake of His life, that He gave through His death and resurrection, when we partake of the elements. A communion prayer is a prayer that you can say at home when you take communion. The following scriptures can be used to create a prayer that is biblical.
Communion Scriptures
The following scriptures can be read before taking communion to remind us of its importance and significance.
“And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, “Take, eat; this is My body.” hen He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.” Matthew 26: 26-28
“And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.” ” Luke 22: 19-20
“Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.” John 6: 53-54
“And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. Acts 2:42
“and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. So then, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. Everyone ought to examine themselves before they eat of the bread and drink from the cup.” 1 Corinthians 11: 24-28
The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ? Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread. 1 Corinthians 10: 16-17
Healing By The Holy Communion
Gather your elements before taking communion. Bread or crackers can be used to represent his body. Wine, juice, or water can be used to represent His blood.
Here is a prayer that can be said while taking communion: “Heavenly Father, I thank you for this special time where I am privileged to come before you in repentance and remembrance to eat of the bread, which represents your body, and to drink of the cup that represents your blood. Communion is a celebration that represents freedom from sin, bondage, and sickness and disease. Lord, thank you for this most precious gift. I bless the elements now as I partake.
I hold in my hand the testimony of a broken body. [Hold the break in your hand]. This bread is your body which you gave for me. I eat it in loving remembrance of you and your love for me. Thank you for your ultimate sacrifice that has set me and my family free. I pray for divine healing and deliverance for myself and each one of my family members for “surely he has born our sicknesses, he carried our pains, yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God and afflicted.”
I declare the peace and healing grace of God to heal any broken places in my family. I pray that every member will feel the overwhelming presence of God’s peace and provision in their lives. [Name each one individually]. I declare that by the stripes of Jesus we are healed. I thankfully receive every blessing that the broken body of Jesus released for me. I thank you Lord. [Partake of the bread].
I hold this cup before you Lord [hold the raised cup] and plead your blood over each of my loved ones, knowing that it broke the bondage of sin, and we are set free and cleansed through the blood of Jesus. Place a hedge of protection around each family member that they would feel of your love. Stir in their hearts a desire to know you. Summon them with your voice.
I declare that the prodigals return home and that their hearts are turned towards you. The blood, that goes as deep as sin itself goes, is for every person who chooses to come under it. I declare that the blood of Jesus sets us free. As for me and my house we will serve the Lord. [Partake of the blood].
One of the reasons we don’t get answers to prayer is because our consciences can subconsciously condemn us. This unconscious guilt can keep us from asking in faith, with trust in God, that He will grant our request.
As you take communion, recognize that you are clean before God NOW, making it an opportune time to pray that prayer that you’ve been waiting on, and is yet unanswered. There is nothing between you and God that would stop Him from answering your prayer….. so pray it again after you partake of the elements, knowing that you will receive an answer, and that it is done!
Say: “Father, I recognize that not one of my petitions goes unnoticed. I know that you hear my prayers, and if You hear, I know that I have what I ask. I thank you for answering my prayer, that it is done…. it is established. I know you have given me everything that pertains to life and godliness. I pray that the answers to my prayers will be manifest quickly, in Jesus name. Amen.”
Summary
The taking of communion is one of the most underutilized gifts that Christians are not using to their advantage. It’s a sacred time where we re-commit our lives and our hearts to the One who saved us. I would urge you to make communion a vital part of your daily walk with the Lord for it is the meal of absolute triumph, and will bring you comfort and assurance that you and your loved ones are covered by the blood.
