How does God view narcissism? Can narcissists be forgiven if they don’t feel guilt? What is a seared conscience?
Here’s my take on it:
Narcissists feel guilt. Mine did. At least in the beginning. This was until he chose to suffocate his internal compass. The operative word here is “chose.” Narcissists are free agents just like the rest of us.
Over time, as a narcissist continues to deny his guilt, his conscience becomes seared, dulling his sense of right and wrong. (1 Timothy 4:2) To “sear” means to burn, scorch, or desensitize. This scorching of the conscience is the result of the choices a narcissist makes AND continues to make.
Narcissists know the difference between right and wrong or they wouldn’t be able to function in society as well as they do or to be as conniving and convincing as they are.
This holds true even though they lack empathy…
It’s a narcissist’s impenetrable pride that keeps them from humbling themselves enough to recognize their deplorable behavior and want to change. Narcissists can drop to their knees and plead for God’s mercy and forgiveness just like the rest of us.
Nebuchadnezzar came to his senses, although it did take him seven years living as an animal. (Daniel 4:33) This is so typical of a narcissist. They don’t learn from their behavior until they hit rock bottom, which is actually their saving grace.
Pray for rock bottom…
It’s the rigidity of the disorder, coupled with their fear of vulnerability, that makes them such hard nuts to crack. Rest assured, all of you who have suffered at the hands of a merciless narcissist, spiritual laws do indeed apply to them.
They are not the exception…
God is merciful but He is also JUST and justice will prevail … God abhors the sin of pride. The silver lining is that God will use, what a narcissist meant for harm, to work things together for good, to those who love Him. (Romans 8:28)
He’s super awesome that way. His love never fails…
You can take that promise to the bank. Take heart, my friends. God has got you covered.
